• The New York Yankees will see the return of yet another familiar face on Tuesday as two-time All-Star right-hander Luis Severino is expected to make his season debut in the opener of a three-game series against the visiting Los Angeles Angels. Severino has been sidelined since spring training with shoulder inflammation that turned into a Grade 2 lat strain.”I am very excited about (my return). It’s been a long wait, but it happened. I’m happy that I’m healthy and I’m going to be able to help my team,” Severino told reporters. The 25-year-old Severino’s season debut comes on the heels of the one provided by fellow right-hander Dellin Betances, who returned from right shoulder impingement and a right lat strain to strike out both batters he faced on just eight pitches in New York’s 6-4 setback in Toronto on Sunday.
• The Yankees (98-53) dropped two of three to the Blue Jays to see their magic number hold at three to clinch the American League East heading into their series with the Angels (68-82), who snapped a six-game skid with a 6-4 win against Tampa Bay on Sunday. Albert Pujols belted his 656th homer and drove in four runs in the finale, although he is 2-for-12 against the Yankees this season and 2-for-9 in his career versus Severino.
• Suarez fell to 0-5 in his last 11 starts since beating the Rays on June 15 after yielding six runs on four hits in three innings of last Tuesday’s 8-0 setback against Cleveland. “Clearly, command was an issue (versus the Indians). He was trying to do what he did in Oakland by pitching in, but obviously a few went too far in,” Angels manager Brad Ausmus said of the 21-year-old, who hit three batters in his short stint. Suarez has been taken deep 20 times in 16 appearances (71 1/3 innings) heading into his first career tilt versus the Yankees.
• Severino allowed four earned runs on 13 hits with 11 strikeouts over 7 2/3 innings in three rehab appearances, one at Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre and two others with Double-A Trenton. “We’re excited to get him back,” New York manager Aaron Boone told reporters. “I feel like he’s been in a pretty good place physically now for a couple months and building really good momentum, and I feel like his progression has gone really smooth.” Severino, who tossed 64 pitches over 3 1/3 innings in his last minor-league appearance, is expected to be limited to approximately 75 on Tuesday.
• New York RF Aaron Judge launched a solo shot on Sunday, boosting his September totals in homers (four), RBIs (seven) and runs scored (11).
• Los Angeles SS Andrelton Simmons is 5-for-12 in his last three contests after going 4-for-35 in his previous nine.
• Yankees INF DJ LeMahieu is 10-for-22 with two RBIs and three runs scored during his four-game hitting streak.
