• The Washington Nationals took advantage of baseball’s new extra-inning rules to end a lengthy scoreless drought and snap a three-game slide. The Nationals will try to win back-to-back games for the first time in 2020 when they once again serve as the road team in their home park against the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday. The Nationals were blanked over the first nine innings Wednesday night to extend their scoreless stretch to 15 frames before breaking out for four runs in the top of the 10th. The new rules gave Washington a runner at second to begin the frame and the bases were soon loaded before Adam Eaton’s RBI single and Asdrubal Cabrera’s three-run triple.

• The Blue Jays hammered six home runs in winning the first two games in Nationals Park – both as the visiting team – before being held to three hits by Nationals ace Max Scherzer and two relievers. Washington goes with another right-hander in Erick Fedde, who opposes Blue Jays southpaw Hyun Jin Ryu.

• Fedde threw 68 pitches in four innings of a no-decision against the New York Yankees on Saturday. He yielded one earned run while striking out three, lowering his career ERA at Nationals Park to 6.15. The 27-year-old is 0-1 with a 3.47 ERA in six career games (five starts) against American League opponents.

• Ryu allowed three runs over 4 2/3 innings at Tampa Bay in his first game of the season last Friday. He made two prior starts in Nationals Park and has yielded just one run in 11 1/3 combined innings. Michael Taylor is 0-for-11 with six strikeouts against the 33-year-old from South Korea.

• After this series ends, the Nationals are off until Tuesday since their scheduled weekend series in Miami was postponed when several Marlins tested positive for COVID-19.

• Washington OF Juan Soto has been cleared by Major League Baseball to return from the COVID-19 injured list, but still needs approval from the city government.

• Blue Jays 2B Cavan Biggio is 0-for-12 in the series after going 5-for-13 in three games at Tampa Bay.
