• The Seattle Mariners have cooled off after a sizzling start to the year, coming back to the pack in the American League West after dropping nine of their last 12 games. After losing three straight to close out a six-game road trip, the Mariners look to get back on track when they play the first of four versus the visiting Texas Rangers on Thursday night. Seattle leads the majors in runs and homers but it was limited to three runs and nine hits in a two-game interleague sweep at San Diego. The Mariners, who scratched out two hits in Wednesday’s 1-0 setback, have dropped six in a row at home and scored two runs or fewer four times in that span.
• Texas had won six of seven before opening a seven-game road trip by getting outscored 23-11 in a series sweep in Oakland. The Rangers are not getting much from their starting pitchers, who have allowed 24 earned runs over 25 2/3 innings in their last six games.
• With Adrian Sampson forced to pitch in relief Wednesday, the Rangers will promote Hearn from Triple-A Nashville to make his major league debut. Acquired from Pittsburgh last summer, Hearn made four starts at Nashville and compiled a 1-3 record and 4.05 ERA, striking out 26 in 20 innings. “He’s got power stuff,” manager Chris Woodward said. “When he’s in the zone his fastball plays well. He throws hard. His secondary stuff, when he throws it with conviction, he’s got elite stuff.”
• Gonzales was denied his fifth win last time out when he served up a two-run homer and wound up charged with three runs on eight hits in seven-plus innings of a no-decision against the Los Angeles Angels. It was the fourth quality start in six outings for the 27-year-old, who has not permitted more than three runs or two walks in any of his appearances. Joey Gallo is 4-for-10 with a pair of home runs off Gonzales, who was 2-1 with a 2.78 in four starts versus Texas last year.
• Mariners OF Domingo Santana, who had one of the two hits Wednesday, is batting .326 at home.
• Rangers RF Nomar Mazara homered twice Wednesday for his second straight multi-hit game after going 1-for-19 in his previous five games.
• Seattle acquired RH Mike Wright from Baltimore on Wednesday in exchange for minor league INF Ryan Ogren.
