• The Detroit Tigers dropped a major league-worst 114 games in 2019 and did not win more than two in a row over the final four months of the season. The Tigers have already posted back-to-back wins on two occasions in the first week of the 2020 season, including last weekend in Cincinnati, and will again look to get the best of the Reds when the teams meet Friday night in Detroit. The Tigers, who have homered in each of the first seven contests, were forced to settle for a four-game split with Kansas City after dropping the series finale 5-3 on Thursday. Miguel Cabrera entered the contest in a 2-for-22 slump but went deep twice for the 40th multi-homer game of his career and his first since Sept. 30, 2016.

• Cincinnati had the finale of its four-game series against the Chicago Cubs washed out by rain, which could help a pitching staff that yielded 23 runs in losing two of three. Mike Moustakas and Nick Senzel returned after missing three games because of a COVID-19 scare and both homered in Wednesday’s 12-7 win that snapped the Reds’ four-game slid.

• Castillo gave up a first-inning run and shut down the Tigers the rest of the way last weekend, striking out 11 while permitting six hits over six innings. Coming off an All-Star campaign in 2019, the Dominican Republic native was outstanding on the road last season, posting a 7-1 record and 3.88 ERA in 12 starts. C.J. Cron was 2-for-3 with an RBI double against Castillo last weekend.

• Even though his winless streak reached 20 starts, the Tigers and Turnbull came away feeling good about his performance against the Reds, when he struck out eight and permitted one run and three hits over five innings. The 27-year-old suffered through a nightmarish 2019 campaign, losing his final 13 decisions and winning only once after April. Turnbull is 0-12 with a 5.33 ERA in 17 starts at Comerica Park.

• Tigers 2B Jonathan Schoop has homered in each of the last three games.

• The Reds placed RHP Matt Bowman (elbow) on the 10-day injured list and LHP Wade Miley (groin) is expected to join him Friday.

• Cabrera has 480 career homers and needs 13 to tie Lou Gehrig and Fred McGriff for 28th on the all-time list.
