Arizona State finishes an opening stretch with five of its first seven games on the road when it travels to San Francisco on Tuesday night. The Sun Devils, who opened their season in China with a non-conference game against Colorado, come in off a 67-65 victory at Princeton on Thanksgiving. Arizona State also played two games in the Air Force Reserve Tip-Off tournament at the Mohegan Sun Resort in Uncasville, Conn., where they gave defending NCAA champion Virginia a battle before falling, 48-45, and then rallying to defeat St. John’s, 80-67. So the short one-hour flight from Phoenix, Ariz., to northern California will be an easy one for Bobby Hurley’s squad by comparison. “It was a drop in the bucket compared to China,” Hurley told azcentral.com about the four-plus hour trip to the east coast to play the last three games. “Certainly it was good to get back and have a few days to practice and get ready for our last road trip (before Pac-12 play starts).”

San Francisco also picked up some frequent flyer miles in its last game, losing at Hawaii, 85-75, on Monday night.

Junior point guard Remy Martin, who was a second-team All-Pac-12 pick last season, is off to a strong start, posting a career-high 33 points in the win at Princeton en route to conference player of the week honors. He leads the team in scoring (21.7) and assists (3.7) and also has 16 steals. Senior guard Rob Edwards (12.3) is the only other Sun Devil averaging in double figures with junior forward Romello White (9.8) not far behind while also grabbing a team-best 7.8 rebounds per game.

The Dons had a season-opening seven-game win streak snapped at Hawaii and now will play back-to-back home games against Pac-12 opponents with Bay Area rival Cal visiting on Wednesday. Five players are averaging in double figures with junior guards Jamaree Bouyea and Charles Minlend leading the way with 15.1 averages. Jimbo Lull, a 7-foot senior center, leads the team in rebounding (7.6) and is also third in scoring (12.8) and has connected on 5-of-7 from 3-point range.

Arizona State leads the series with the Dons, 5-4, and won the last meeting, 75-57, on Dec. 2, 2017 in Tempe, Ariz.

The Sun Devils have 23 wins, including 11 on the road, in five seasons when trailing at halftime under Hurley, including comeback wins over St. John’s and Princeton this season.

San Francisco ranks third in the nation with an average of 87.1 points per game and is fifth in the nation with an average of 11.1 3-pointers per game.
