Georgetown is 2-0 but it hasn’t won with the type of authority that would suggest it can beat a team such as Penn State, which comes to town Wednesday for a Gavitt Tipoff Games showdown. The Hoyas squeaked by a pair of seemingly overmatched teams but will need to raise their game against the Nittany Lions, who have been impressive in their two season-opening victories. In their most recent victory, the Hoyas allowed Central Arkansas – a team that fell to No. 4 Duke by 51 points on Tuesday – to hang around and were outscored by the Bears in the second half in an 89-78 triumph. “It’s a work in progress,” Georgetown coach Patrick Ewing told the media. “We still have a long way to go from now to where we want to be at the end of the year.” Omer Yurtseven, the 7-foot transfer from North Carolina State, had his second straight double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds but sophomore guards James Akinjo and Mac McClung regressed from the opener, combining to 3-of-18 from the field and 1-of-7 from deep.

The Nittany Lions have received solid contributions from as many as eight players, including senior Lamar Stevens, who is in search of his third straight 600-point season, in dispatching Maryland-Eastern Shore and Wagner with relative ease.

While the Nittany Lions know what they will get from Stevens, the key to coach Pat Chambers orchestrating a turnaround from last season’s 14-18 mark are sophomores Myreon Jones, Myles Dread and Izaiah Brockington. The trio of guards have looked good in the early going, each averaging double figures, but they will face much sterner tests in the future, particularly when Big Ten play commences. Mike Watkins, a senior who has averaged 8.2 rebounds in his career, will bring a veteran presence to the frontcourt for Chambers, who has one 20-win season in his first eight years in Happy Valley.

Josh LeBlanc returned from a suspension that caused him to miss the opener against Mount St. Mary’s, but the sophomore logged only 17 minutes and failed to corral a rebound, something that didn’t happen at all during his freshman campaign. The 6-7 forward, who was second on the team in rebounds last season, was outplayed by fellow reserves Galen Alexander and freshman Qudus Wahab, who combined for 13 points and 12 rebounds. LeBlanc threw down a dunk that began a key 12-3 run for the Hoyas and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him back in the starting lineup soon, likely at the expense of junior Jamorko Pickett, who has enjoyed a solid start with 16 points and 15 boards in two games.

Stevens is fifth on Penn State’s all-time scoring list with 1,690 points, 523 behind leading scorer Talor Battle (2,213 points from 2008-11).

Neither team has had any trouble adjusting to the new 3-point line, which was moved from 20 feet, 9 inches to 22 feet, 1.75 inches, as both are shooting better than 37 percent.

Senior G Jagan Mosely remained with the Hoyas despite a difficult junior season and it seems to be paying off as the Marlboro, N.J., native is starting and averaging 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.
