Men’s US Open: #5 Ruud v. #3 Alcaraz

Who will WIN the championship?

#5 Casper Ruud (NOR)

#3 Carlos Alcaraz (ESP)

Current odds:

Casper Ruud: (+187)

Carlos Alcaraz: (-225)

Carlos Alcaraz finished the 2021 season as a kid and returned to the tour as a man in 2022, as his physical transformation during the extended off-season was impressive. He was forced to retire from the quarterfinal match at last year’s US Open after playing consecutive five-setters but has now won three consecutive tough and grueling five-setters and even looked fresher than his semifinal opponent Frances Tiafoe at the closing stages.

Casper Ruud is the fresher player heading into this big clash in New York as he spent far less time on the court, at least in the last few days. He needed less than three hours to beat Matteo Berrettini in the quarterfinal and just over three hours against Karen Khachanov in the semifinal.

Head-to-head: Carlos Alcaraz leads 2-1 (2-0 in official matches, 4-0 in sets). This is probably the Spaniard’s easiest matchup in the second week of this campaign, and he should ideally be beating Casper Ruud without too many problems in these conditions. The only way the Norwegian can give himself a chance in this battle is by dragging the match as long as possible and physically draining the Spaniard, who has had tough matches and days all week but looks strong as ever.
