Texas Tech may be forced to go with its backup quarterback on the road against the nation’s fourth-ranked defense when it visits Kansas State in a Big 12 matchup on Saturday. With Patrick Mahomes II – the third-rated FBS passer – dealing with a shoulder issue, the high-powered Red Raiders might have to give transfer Nic Shimonek his first career start.

Regardless of who starts under center he will have plenty of targets in the passing game, led by Jonathan Giles, who lit up the Jayhawks for 12 catches, 219 yards and two TDs last week. Justin Stockton and Devin Lauderdale are among four others with at least 10 catches on the season and they combined for 15 grabs and three scores in last year’s 59-44 win over the Wildcats. Senior defensive lineman Kris Williams (three sacks) helped the defense get some rare notoriety in the win over Kansas, as the Red Raiders allowed 296 yards of total offense — the fewest they’ve let up in a conference game since 2012.

Eleven of the Wildcats’ 15 offensive touchdowns have come on the ground, with a balanced attack led by Ertz (170 yards) helping to make up for some deficiencies in the passing game. Sophomore fullback Winston Dimel has just 40 yards but has found the end zone six times, tied for the Big 12 lead. Senior defensive lineman Jordan Willis had two more sacks against West Virginia, is tied for the conference lead with four and ranks tied for sixth (per game) with 5.5 tackles for a loss.

The Red Raiders have been held to an average of 18.5 points in losing their last two trips to Manhattan in 2012 and 2014.

Texas Tech RB DeMarcus Felton has gained 171 yards on 27 carries in his last two games after picking up 33 yards on six runs in his first two.

Snyder will become the seventh to coach 300 games at one FBS school.
