• Mike Yastrzemski powered San Francisco to a dramatic victory in the middle contest of a three-game set and he will look to help the Giants win the series when they host the San Diego Padres on Thursday. The Giants were four outs from losing on Wednesday before scoring the final four runs, the last coming on Yastrzemski’s walk-off homer to lead off the bottom of the ninth. Yastrzemski went deep twice and Donovan Solano slugged a tying three-run blast in the eighth for the Giants, who will be seeking their fourth victory in the past five games. San Francisco’s offense figures to get a boost as manager Gabe Kapler said that third baseman Evan Longoria (oblique) and first baseman Brandon Belt (Achilles) should both be activated prior to Thursday’s game.

• The Padres may not know until close to game time whether Eric Hosmer will be available after the first baseman was scratched for the third time in five games on Wednesday due to stomach issues. “He’s still having that GI issue and the last couple days he’s been a little woozy in the mornings but he’s gotten better throughout the day and stronger throughout the day,” San Diego manager Jayce Tingler said after Wednesday’s loss. “But instead of getting better (Wednesday) it started getting worse. We have doctors checking him out and hopefully we’ll have more information (Thursday).”

• Lamet struck out eight in five innings to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks in his first outing when he allowed one run, five hits and one walk. The 28-year-old has a powerful arm with 252 strikeouts in 192 1/3 big league innings but also has control lapses (85 career walks). Lamet is 1-1 with a 3.09 ERA in two career starts against the Giants and has allowed a homer to Belt while whiffing him in four of six at-bats.

• Gausman is making his first start of the season and will look to improve on a four-inning relief stint in which he allowed three runs (two earned) and six hits against the Dodgers last Friday. The 29-year-old is in his first season with San Francisco after splitting last season between the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds. Gausman has never pitched against the Padres but Wil Myers (2-for-6) is among the players he has faced in the past.

• Despite a 3-3 record, the Giants have been outscored 33-20.

• San Diego 3B Manny Machado went 2-for-4 with a homer on Wednesday after being 3-for-18 over the first five games.

• San Francisco rookie C Chadwick Tromp made his major league debut Wednesday and struck out three times in four hitless at-bats.
