The SMU defense will be counted on again when the Mustangs travel to Tulsa on Friday for an American Athletic Conference matchup. Injuries and inexperience have slowed the SMU offense, which is ranked 117th nationally at 19.8 points.

The Mustangs have struggled in the red zone, scoring five touchdowns and eight field goals in 21 trips. Redshirt freshman Ben Hicks has thrown for 1,026 yards, four touchdowns and nine interceptions since taking over for injured Matt Davis but was sacked four times and harassed continuously by Temple last week. Horace Richardson and Jordan Wyatt have four interceptions apiece and Wyatt has returned two for touchdowns.

The Hurricane had a bye week after Brewer – who is second nationally in attempts per game – rushed an AAC-record 46 times and 252 yards against Fresno State to raise his league-leading average to 133.5 yards. Dane Evans has thrown for 888 yards, eight TDs and six interceptions with five of those scores going to Lucas (24 catches, 395 yards). Linebacker Trent Martin leads a defense, which is allowing an average of 30 points and 381.2 yards, with 29 tackles.

SMU WR Courtland Sutton (22 catches, 492 yards, four TDs) leads all FBS players with at least 20 catches, and boasts a 22.4 yards-per-reception average.

Tulsa is 8-2 when scoring at least 40 points in its 17 games under coach Philip Montgomery.

Lucas had similar numbers through four games last year (26 catches, 409 yards, five TDs) before a knee injury ended his season.
