• The best player in baseball is beginning to heat up again, and the Los Angeles Angels are reaping the benefits. Mike Trout will try to homer for the third straight game and lead the Angels to a series win when they visit the Seattle Mariners for the finale of a four-game set on Sunday. Trout went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a pair of walks in a 9-3 victory to open the series on Thursday and homered in Friday’s 4-3 setback before capping Saturday’s 6-3 triumph with a solo blast in the ninth. Kole Calhoun’s two-run homer in the eighth served as the go-ahead shot on Saturday for Los Angeles (28-30), which moved within two games of .500 with the victory and has totaled seven home runs in the series.

• The Mariners got a pair of blasts from Edwin Encarnacion on Saturday, but it was not enough as they fell for the 13th time in the last 16 games and put themselves in danger of a fifth consecutive series loss. Seattle will try to avoid that fate behind Marco Gonzales while the Angels turn to fellow left-hander Jose Suarez in his major-league debut.

• Suarez is set to make his major-league debut after going 2-0 with a 3.91 ERA in five games – four starts – for Triple-A Salt Lake. The 21-year-old Venezuelan advanced through three levels in 2018, compiling a 3-6 record with a 3.92 ERA in 26 total starts and notching 142 strikeouts in 117 innings. Suarez did not work more than five innings in any of his five appearances this season and could come in behind an opener on Sunday.

• Gonzales went 5-0 with a 2.80 ERA in seven starts bridging March and April but was not as sharp in May, when he went 0-5 with a 5.86 ERA in six outings. The 27-year-old was knocked around for eight runs – six earned – and eight hits in four innings to suffer a loss against Texas on Tuesday. Gonzales faced Los Angeles twice in April and came away with a 1-0 record while allowing a total of four runs and 12 hits in 15 1/3 frames.

• The Mariners are reportedly in talks to trade OF/1B Jay Bruce to the Philadelphia Phillies.

• Los Angeles OF Cesar Puello is 8-for-15 with six RBIs and five runs scored in three games since being recalled.

• Seattle RF Domingo Santana is 0-for-11 with eight strikeouts in his last three games.
