• Dansby Swanson is beginning to show why he was the first overall pick in the 2015 draft and looks to continue a hot start with the bat when his Atlanta Braves visit the Colorado Rockies on Monday for the opener of their three-game series. Swanson, who batted a combined .243 over his first three seasons in the majors, is 9-for-26 with three homers and nine RBIs after his walk-off single in Sunday’s 4-3 win over Miami. “No doubt in my mind he was going to come through,” Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman told the Atlanta Constitution of Swanson after his team finished a 5-1 homestand. “Winners come through, and Dansby is a winner. Since he has been here, he has come up with big clutch hits.” Swanson is 6-for-9 with a homer in his career against Colorado ace Kyle Freeland, who gets the ball in the series opener while Julio Teheran makes his third start of the season for Atlanta.
• The Rockies are looking for their first home win of the season after suffering a 12-6 loss on Sunday that completed a sweep of the three-game set by the Los Angeles Dodgers and have dropped seven of their last eight contests overall. All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado, who has yet to belt a home run after going deep 38 times last year, recorded three hits and two RBIs on Sunday and batted .387 against the Braves last year.
• Teheran gave the Braves a chance to win in his first two starts of the year but lasted just five innings in each of them as his pitch count rose thanks to a total of five walks. The 28-year-old Colombian gave up three runs and four hits in a loss at Philadelphia on Opening Day and limited the Chicago Cubs to one run and six hits without factoring in the decision on Wednesday. Teheran, who has registered 14 strikeouts in the early going, is 5-1 with a 2.25 ERA in 10 career starts against the Rockies.
• Freeland struggled with his command last time out in Tampa Bay and lasted just 4 2/3 innings after permitting three runs on three hits and four walks to take the loss despite recording 10 strikeouts. The 25-year-old native of Denver, who was fourth in last year’s National League Cy Young Award voting, won his season debut by holding Miami to one run and two hits over seven frames. Nick Markakis is 5-for-11 with two homers versus Freeland, who was 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in two starts against Atlanta last year.
• Rockies OF David Dahl, who is 12-for-35 to start the season, left Sunday’s game with an apparent oblique injury.
• With Brian McCann (hamstring) landing on the 10-day injured list, fellow C Alex Jackson was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett and went 0-for-3 in his major-league debut on Sunday.
• Rockies SS Trevor Story launched three home runs and batted .357 in seven games against Atlanta in 2018.
