• The Chicago Cubs always seem to enjoy the friendly confines of Wrigley Field but especially this season as they continue their three-game series with the visiting Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday afternoon. Chicago, which owns the worst road record in baseball (21-33), improved to 37-18 at home with a 6-2 victory over Milwaukee on Friday. The Cubs, who have won nine of their last 11 at Wrigley Field, trimmed their deficit to one-half game behind first-place St. Louis in the National League Central while the Brewers fell 2 1/2 games off the pace. Chicago shortstop Javier Baez snapped a 3-for-24 slump by going 3-for-5 with his 26th home run and three RBIs on Friday while third baseman Kris Bryant was 1-for-21 in his last five games before going 2-for-5.

• Right fielder Christian Yelich went 0-for-4 on Friday to snap his career-high 19-game hitting streak for Milwaukee, which has lost four of five. The Cubs’ Cole Hamels (oblique) comes off the injured list Saturday to make his first start since June 28 and opposes Gio Gonzalez, who left his last outing – against the Cubs – with shoulder tightness.

• Gonzalez carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before leaving the game with a no-decision after allowing two runs and three hits while striking out nine over 6 1/3 innings of Milwaukee’s 3-2 victory July 26. It marked the first time in eight starts this season that the 33-year-old Floridian, who has yielded more than three runs only once in 2019, made it through six innings. Chicago’s Anthony Rizzo is 2-for-28 with seven strikeouts and Baez 1-for-11 with six whiffs against Gonzalez, who is 4-3 with a 2.81 ERA in 12 starts versus the Cubs to include a 7-0 victory at Wrigley Field on May 10 when he permitted two hits over 5 2/3 innings.

• Hamels boasted a 1.22 ERA in his last six starts, including the one inning he pitched against Cincinnati before sustaining the injury that landed him on the IL. The 35-year-old California native made two rehab starts with Triple-A Iowa, allowing three runs, three hits (two home runs) and three walks while throwing 59 pitches in three innings Sunday in his last tune-up. Yelich is 7-for-28 with a home run and seven strikeouts against Hamels, who is 8-3 with a 3.42 ERA in 17 starts against Milwaukee – 1-0, 2.08 ERA in two turns this season.

• Chicago UTIL Ben Zobrist, on the restricted list since May 8 (personal), was set to start a rehab assignment with Class A South Bend on Friday.

• Milwaukee LHP Drew Pomeranz pitched a perfect eighth inning with two strikeouts Friday in his debut with the team.

• The teams have split 10 meetings this season. The Cubs have won the last six season series.
