• The St. Louis Cardinals used a five-run ninth inning to win the middle contest of the series and now look to claim the three-game set when they visit the Seattle Mariners on Thursday afternoon. St. Louis was blanked until the ninth on Wednesday, but Tommy Edman’s three-run homer was the decisive blow in a 5-2 comeback win. Edman was called on to pinch-hit for Kolten Wong with two on and two out in the ninth and belted his third homer in 36 major-league at-bats. Paul Goldschmidt recorded two hits for his first multi-hit effort since June 19, but his home-run drought stretched to 11 games.

• The Mariners have dropped five of their last six games following a stretch during which they won six of seven contests. Seattle’s hitters struck out 14 times in Wednesday’s defeat, with J.P. Crawford and Tom Murphy fanning three times apiece and Domingo Santana and Kyle Seager each whiffing twice.

• Wacha lost to San Diego in his last turn, when he allowed two runs (both on solo homers) and six hits over seven innings. The 28-year-old has served up 11 homers in nine road appearances (eight starts) this season, going 3-3 with a 4.80 ERA. Wacha lost in his lone career outing against Seattle when he allowed two runs and four hits over five frames on Sept. 24, 2013.

• Seattle will go with an “opener” that has yet to be announced and then turn the contest over to Milone. The 32-year-old, who will be following a reliever for the fifth straight outing, scattered three hits over five scoreless innings of a no-decision against Houston in his last appearance. Milone is 2-0 with a 3.63 ERA in three career outings against St. Louis.

• Cardinals LHP Andrew Miller struck out both batters he faced on Wednesday, giving him 41 strikeouts in 27 1/3 innings.

• Seattle LHP Roenis Elias blew the save on Wednesday, just his second failure in 13 opportunities.

• St. Louis activated RHP Ryan Helsley (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Memphis.
