• The Los Angeles Dodgers look to become the first team in the majors to reach 70 wins and continue their mastery in the season series when they visit the Colorado Rockies on Monday for the opener of a three-game set. The Dodgers missed a chance for a three-game sweep after an 11-4 loss at Washington on Sunday but still own the majors’ best record (69-38) and have won eight of 10 versus the Rockies in 2019. Corey Seager provided most of the offense Sunday with a three-run homer and rookie catcher Will Smith had a single after recording six RBIs in Saturday’s 9-3 victory for Los Angeles, which leads the league in least runs allowed (416). Kenta Maeda gets the call in the series opener for the Dodgers, while Colorado turns to fellow right-hander Jon Gray, who boasts 128 strikeouts over 124 1/3 innings this season.
• The Rockies continue to fade out of playoff contention in the National League wild-card race after dropping two of three in Cincinnati over the weekend and going 3-11 in their last 14 games since sitting 46-46 on July 14. Yonder Alonso is 6-for-12 with a homer, three RBIs and four runs scored since coming to Colorado after launching a homer on Sunday, while All-Star teammate David Dahl is 8-for-24 during a six-game hitting streak.
• Maeda is winless in the last two months and struggled in his last trip to the mound Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels, allowing three runs on four hits over 4 1/3 innings. The 31-year-old Japan native was 7-2 through May, but is 0-5 over his last 10 appearances with a 4.08 ERA and just two quality starts. Charlie Blackmon is 7-for-22 with two doubles and a homer versus Maeda, who is 1-0 with a 2.76 ERA in three starts against the Rockies this year.
• Gray left his last start after four innings due to a calf injury but is expected to be ready to try and reach double-figure wins for the fourth straight season. The 27-year-old Oklahoman is winless in his last four starts while permitting 12 runs over 21 1/3 innings despite pitching four frames of one-run ball at Washington on Wednesday. Cody Bellinger (9-for-14, four doubles, one triple) has had success against Gray, who is 1-1 with a 4.97 ERA in two starts versus the Dodgers in 2019.
• Colorado 2B Ryan McMahon is 8-for-18 with a homer, six RBIs and five walks in his last six contests.
• Bellinger and INF Max Muncy have combined for 60 homers, one behind the franchise record before August from a duo set by Gary Sheffield and Eric Karros in 2000.
• The Rockies released veteran 1B Mark Reynolds and RHP Seunghwan Oh on Sunday.
