• In the not-too-distant past, a pitching duel between Madison Bumgarner and Noah Syndergaard would be worth the price of admission. However, both of the former All-Stars have been struggling and will each be seeking their fourth win when they square off in the opener of a three-game series between the visiting San Francisco Giants and New York Mets on Tuesday night. San Francisco’s starting rotation has been a train wreck, posting a major league-worst 7.32 ERA in May before receiving back-to-back quality starts over the weekend to take two of three from the Baltimore Orioles. “It’s encouraging to see we’re getting quality starts. Hopefully it will be contagious,” said Giants manager Bruce Bochy, who will send Bumgarner to the mound in hopes of securing the team’s first three-game winning streak since April 21-24.

• The Mets return home following a 2-5 road trip that dropped the team to 4-17 in its last 21 contests away from Citi Field, but they will play their next 12 games without having to leave the city. Catcher Wilson Ramos has four home runs, eight RBIs and five multiple-hit contests in his last 10 games for New York.

• Bumgarner has never lost to the Mets in seven career starts, going 6-0 with a 1.69 ERA, and he has been even better at Citi Field — winning all five outings with a microscopic 0.73 ERA. He was a hard-luck loser last time out at the Miami Marlins after giving up two runs and six hits over six innings and settled for a no-decision versus Atlanta in his previous turn despite allowing identical numbers. Todd Frazier is 6-for-15 with two homers off Bumgarner, but Michael Conforto is 0-for-6 with five strikeouts.

• Syndergaard has registered quality starts in three of his last four appearances, but he is winless in his last three trips to the mound after yielding three runs and seven hits over six innings at the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday. He struggled in his previous turn but escaped with a no-decision against Detroit despite permitting six runs and 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings. Evan Longoria is 3-for-10 but Brandon Belt is hitless in 12 at-bats versus Syndergaard, who owns a 3-2 mark and 2.86 ERA against the Mets.

• Longoria homered as part of a three-hit, three-RBI game Sunday after going 0-for-18 in his previous seven contests.

• Mets 1B Pete Alonso, who has a team-high 19 homers, has hit safely in six of his last seven games.

• Giants manager Bruce Bochy needs one win to join John McGraw as the only skippers in franchise history with 1,000.
