• Mike Trout is enjoying a monster season and also supplying the Los Angeles Angels with hope of making a run at an American League wild-card spot. The Angels are 6 1/2 games behind the Cleveland Indians for the second berth as they resume play after the All-Star break by hosting the Seattle Mariners on Friday in the opener of a three-game series. Trout smacked six home runs in the final five games before the break, leads the AL with 28 homers and 67 RBIs and is 12-for-24 with two homers against scheduled Seattle starter Mike Leake.  Los Angeles went 3-3 on a six-game road trip prior to the break, a solid accomplishment considering pitcher Tyler Skaggs tragically died in his hotel room on July 1.

• The Mariners are well out of the mix en route to missing the playoffs for the 18th consecutive campaign. Seattle limped into the break with eight setbacks in the past 10 games and is just 26-53 after a splendid 13-2 start.

• Leake has won four of his last five decisions to even his record at .500. The 31-year-old was superb in his last outing on July 3 when he gave up five hits over 7 2/3 shutout innings while receiving a no-decision against the St. Louis Cardinals. Leake is 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA in two starts against the Angels this season and stands 5-4 with a 3.71 ERA in nine career turns.

• Cole will serve as the “opener” before turning the ball over to right-hander Felix Pena. The 29-year-old Pena (6-2, 4.72 ERA) has won six of his past seven decisions and recorded a victory over the Houston Astros in his last outing when he gave up two runs and three hits across four relief frames on July 5. Pena beat Seattle on May 30 when he gave up three runs and three hits over 5 1/3 innings and is 1-1 with a 10.97 ERA in three appearances (two starts) against the Mariners.

• The Mariners won the first five meetings with the Angels this season and hold an 8-5 overall edge.

• Los Angeles DH Shohei Ohtani is 17-for-43 with five homers over the past 11 games.

• Seattle LF Domingo Santana is 12-for-30 during an eight-game hitting streak.
