Scherzer was not as sharp last time out as his Opening Day performance, taking the loss despite striking out nine while allowing two runs and seven hits over five innings against Philadelphia. He was dominant in a losing effort against Jacob deGrom in the opener, going 7 2/3 innings and striking out 12 while permitting two runs and as many hits. Michael Conforto, who hit his first homer Saturday, is 8-for-26 with four blasts off Scherzer, who is 9-5 with a 2.43 ERA in his career versus New York.

Wheeler, who faced high expectations coming off his 12-win campaign in 2018, struggled in his season debut versus Washington and fell into an early hole by serving up a three-run homer during a five-inning stint. The former first-round pick was 2-1 with a 3.05 ERA in three starts against the Nationals last season but was a pedestrian 5-5 at Citi Field as opposed to 7-2 away from home. Adam Eaton is 8-for-13 against Wheeler while Rendon (10-for-28) also has been a nemesis.

Washington has surrendered 17 runs in the eighth inning of the first seven games.

Mets 3B J.D. Davis batted cleanup Saturday and went 3-for-3 with his first two homers.
