The rebuilding Nationals were encouraged by the rapid return to form for new franchise cornerstone Juan Soto, who hit an opposite field three-run homer in the first inning before the rains arrived Tuesday and finished 3-for-4 in his first start since he suffered a right knee injury Aug. 5.

•  Even with the nightcap being rained out, Wednesday was still a much-needed good day for the Mets, who didn’t hold a single lead during their losing streak, a span in which they fell from first place in the National League East into third.

•  But the victory Wednesday moved the Mets within a game of the first-place Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves, the latter of whom created a tie atop the division by virtue of their 8-6, 11-inning win over the Cincinnati Reds and the Phillies’ 8-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

•  Right-hander Erick Fedde (4-8, 5.15 ERA) will start one of the games for the Nationals, who weren’t sure late Wednesday regarding their second starter nor the order in which the hurlers would appear.

•  Right-hander Marcus Stroman (7-11, 2.83 ERA), who was scheduled to start Wednesday night, will start the opener for the Mets Thursday. He’s expected to be followed by fellow righty Trevor Williams (4-2, 5.06 ERA with the Chicago Cubs), who will be recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to make his New York debut. Williams was acquired, along with Javier Baez, from the Cubs on July 30.

•  Stroman took the loss last Friday, when he gave up two runs over five innings as the Mets fell to the Phillies, 4-2. Williams last pitched in the majors July 25, when he earned the win for the Cubs after tossing 6 1/3 scoreless innings in a 5-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

•  Fedde dropped his fourth straight decision last Friday after surrendering five runs (four earned) over 4 2/3 innings as the Nationals lost to the Braves, 8-4. Fedde is 0-2 with a 4.26 ERA in 10 career games, five starts, against the Mets, including 0-1 in two starts (2.25 ERA) this season.

Stroman is 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA in two career starts against the Nationals, while Williams is 1-2 with a 5.18 ERA in six career meetings, five starts, against Washington.
