• Two teams trending in opposite directions meet Thursday when the San Diego Padres begin a four-game series against the visiting Washington Nationals, who have won four in a row and nine of their last 11. San Diego has dropped seven of its last 10 games but expects to have star rookie Fernando Tatis Jr. back in the lineup for Thursday’s contest. The 20-year-old Tatis has been out since April 28 with a strained left hamstring but was deemed ready to return after playing two minor-league rehab games for Double-A Amarillo earlier this week. The Padres lost 7-5 to Philadelphia on Wednesday despite an encouraging performance by outfielder Wil Myers, who broke out of a prolonged slump by going 2-for-4 with a double and solo homer.

• The Padres are facing a red-hot Washington team riding a wave of momentum after Trea Turner blasted his third career walk-off homer in Wednesday’s 6-4 victory over the Chicago White Sox. “Every day, it’s been somebody different,” manager Dave Martinez told reporters. “That’s what makes it really good right now. Everybody’s stepping up. Every day we’re getting better and our focus is just to win one game.”

• Corbin looks to bounce back from his shortest outing of the season after allowing eight runs (six earned) over 2 2/3 innings in a 9-3 loss to Cincinnati on Friday. The two-time All-Star was dominant in his previous start, tossing a complete game shutout with five strikeouts against Miami. Myers is 10-for-27 with a home run against Corbin, who is 6-7 with a 4.24 ERA in 19 career games (14 starts) versus San Diego.

• Lucchesi earned his first victory since April 21 with a strong outing against Miami on Friday, allowing one run through 6 1/3 innings. The 25-year-old native Californian was 1-1 with a 2.97 ERA and a 28-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio in five starts last month covering 30 1/3 innings. Lucchesi is making his third career start versus Washington after giving up five runs (four earned) over four innings in a no-decision against the Nationals on April 28.

• Washington is averaging 6.7 runs over its last 11 games.

• The Padres placed LHP Matt Strahm on the 10-day injured list with a left rib strain, designated OF Alex Dickerson for assignment and activated RHP Miguel Diaz from the 60-day injured list.

• Nationals 3B Anthony Rendon extended his on-base streak to 21 straight games Wednesday.
