• The San Diego Padres are sitting atop the National League West standings and playing like a team determined to stay there. The Padres have won three of their first four series and can clinch another one Saturday when they continue their four-game set against the host Arizona Diamondbacks. After holding on for a 7-6 victory in Thursday’s series opener, San Diego received a strong outing from rookie starter Chris Paddack on Friday and improved to 6-2 on its 10-game road trip with a 2-1 victory. Manny Machado homered and Wil Myers and Fernando Tatis Jr. each doubled for the Padres, who are in sole possession of first place in the division after the first 15 games of the season for the first time since 1998.

• Arizona has lost three in a row and needs more production from the middle of the order after Adam Jones, Eduardo Escobar and Christian Walker went a combined 0-for-9 with three strikeouts Friday. Walker has three home runs while filling in for injured first baseman Jake Lamb, but the 28-year-old is batting .231 with two hits in his last 24 at-bats.

• Strahm bounced back from a rough season debut by holding St. Louis to two runs (one earned) over five innings Sunday. “We feel really good about what he did,” manager Andy Green told reporters. “It’s a good one to build on.” The 27-year-old native of North Dakota earned a spot in the rotation after working primarily as a reliever last season, going 3-4 with a 2.05 ERA over 61 1/3 innings.

• Kelly was a hard-luck loser against Boston on Sunday after giving up one run on four hits in eight innings with nine strikeouts and one walk. “He gave us exactly what we needed,” manager Torey Lovullo told reporters. “I think Merrill is going to continue to build on each outing and push in the right direction.” The 30-year-old, who spent the past four years in the Korea Baseball Organization, owns a 12-to-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio over his first two starts covering 14 innings.

• All of San Diego’s 10 victories have come by three or fewer runs.

• Arizona’s pitching staff has recorded at least 10 strikeouts in five consecutive games, tied for the third-longest streak in team history.

• San Diego optioned Pedro Avila to Double-A Amarillo and recalled fellow RHP Gerardo Reyes from Triple-A El Paso.
