• Following a stumble out of the gate, the San Francisco Giants will carry some positive vibes into their home opener Tuesday night against the San Diego Padres. The Giants dropped their first two games by a combined score of 17-2 before rebounding to top the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday and Sunday to split the four-game set. “The first few games were unquestionably sloppy and this game was equally clean,” San Francisco manager Gabe Kapler told the media following Sunday’s 3-1 triumph. “That’s a good sign. It’s a sign of a team that can make adjustments.”

• The Padres enter on a solid note as well after becoming the first National League team to reach three victories with Monday’s 6-2 win over Arizona at home. Trent Grisham went deep and Fernando Tatis Jr. drove in three runs with a triple to pace San Diego. Veteran Jeff Samardzija gets the nod in the home opener for the Giants on Tuesday while the Padres turn to newcomer Zach Davies.

• Davies came over with Grisham in a trade with Milwaukee in November, ending five solid seasons with the Brewers. He failed to get beyond five innings in each of his final 11 starts in 2019 but was 2-0 with a 2.31 ERA in five September outings. The 27-year-old is winless in four career starts against the Giants despite posting a 2.05 ERA.

• Samardzija is beginning his fifth season in San Francisco, where he has reached double digits in victories twice. He went 5-5 with a 2.94 ERA in 14 starts after the All-Star break in 2019 while limiting opponents to a .205 average. The Notre Dame product let up three earned runs in 19 innings over his first three starts against the Padres last year before he was reached for six runs over 5 1/3 frames in a fourth and final encounter.

• Padres 1B Eric Hosmer has missed two games due to a non-Covid-related illness.

• Giants DH Hunter Pence is hitless in 11 at-bats through his first three games.

• Grisham has hit safely in each of his first four games while drawing a total three walks.
