• The San Diego Padres hung on by a thread to snap their four-game losing streak and now have a chance to clinch a series victory when they visit the Miami Marlins on Thursday afternoon for the rubber match of their three-game set. Chris Paddack took a no-hitter into the eighth inning before the Padres edged the Marlins 3-2 on Wednesday as Kirby Yates struck out Curtis Granderson with the winning run at second base to end the game. Austin Hedges belted a two-run homer for San Diego, which was outscored 28-16 in its previous four games, and Manny Machado recorded a pair of hits to improve to 8-for-21 with three blasts over his last five contests. Dinelson Lamet makes his third start since returning from Tommy John surgery for the Padres in the series finale while the Marlins counter with Caleb Smith, who has registered 94 strikeouts in 78 innings this season and owns a 1.56 career ERA versus San Diego.

Starlin Castro broke up Paddack’s no-hit bid on Wednesday with a solo homer in the eighth inning and added an RBI single in the ninth for Miami as his hitting streak reached 11 games (20-for-47). The Marlins have dropped nine of their last 12 overall games but can capture the season series versus the Padres after winning three of the first five contests.

Lamet has lost his first two starts of the year, allowing seven runs and eight hits (three homers) in 10 innings after missing the 2018 season. The 26-year-old Dominican, who has notched 14 strikeouts in the two turns, was 7-8 with a 4.57 ERA in 21 outings during his 2017 rookie campaign. Jorge Alfaro is 1-for-2 with a homer versus Lamet, who held Miami to one run over six innings of a no-decision in 2017.

Smith has won his last two starts after returning from the injured list, permitting six runs – five earned – on eight hits and six walks over 12 innings. The 27-year-old Texan has served up 15 homers in 14 turns despite keeping the ball in the park in Friday’s 8-4 win over the New York Mets. Franmil Reyes is 3-for-8 with a pair of blasts versus Smith, who gave up two runs and three hits (two homers) over five frames in a 5-2 loss to the Marlins on May 31.

Miami 1B-RF Garrett Cooper went 0-for-4 on Wednesday but has notched multiple hits in four of his last seven games.

San Diego 1B Eric Hosmer has gone 5-for-14 over his last three contests and needs two RBIs to reach 700 in his career.

The Padres activated Eric Lauer from the bereavement list on Wednesday and optioned fellow LHP Robbie Erlin to Triple-A El Paso.
