• After getting trampled in back-to-back losses to the Miami Marlins, the Milwaukee Brewers avoided a sweep and got back on track by turning to the long ball in Thursday’s series finale. The Brewers had won three of four at Pittsburgh last weekend prior to the three-game set versus Miami and will host the visiting Pirates in a rematch on Friday night. Reigning National League MVP Christian Yelich is 10-for-18 during a five-game hitting streak after clubbing his major league-leading 23rd homer in Thursday’s 5-1 win. Mike Moustakas also went deep twice to give him five blasts in six games for Milwaukee, which is a percentage point behind first-place Chicago in the NL Central.

• The Pirates salvaged a 3-4 homestand by taking the final two against Atlanta to move within a game of .500, but now they open a 10-game road trip that will include stops at Atlanta and Miami. Josh Bell had three doubles and two RBIs in Thursday’s 6-1 win, giving him major league-best totals of 25 and 58, respectively.

• Davis, in his first season with Pittsburgh, will make his first start since September 2017 after manager Clint Hurdle decided to send the struggling Nick Kingham back to the bullpen. Davis has made four appearances out of the bullpen this season, allowing five runs and eight hits in 7 2/3 innings, and was 1-3 with an 8.63 ERA while making six starts with Cincinnati in 2017. “He’s pitched in the big leagues,” Hurdle said. “He’s started in the big leagues. Give us an opportunity to look at him.”

• Woodruff gets a chance to atone for an ugly performance last weekend in Pittsburgh, when he was hammered for six runs and 10 hits — both season worsts — over four innings but managed to escape with a no-decision. The 26-year-old is 6-0 over his last nine starts and was in the midst of a stellar stretch, permitting a combined six runs over his previous six turns prior to the shellacking by the Pirates. Gregory Polanco and Starling Marte are 3-for-7 off Woodruff, who is 5-0 with a 3.66 ERA in seven home starts.

• Pirates OF Bryan Reynolds has reached base safely in 21 consecutive games.

• Yelich is batting .328 overall and .424 at Miller Park.

• Pirates OF Starling Marte was 8-for-16 in the last three games versus Milwaukee last weekend.
