• Sale’s Opening Day outing was one to forget as the ace was battered for seven runs on six hits – three homers – and two walks in three innings of a loss at Seattle. It was a huge departure from a strong spring by the 30-year-old Floridian, who allowed four hits and registered 13 strikeouts while issuing just one walk over nine scoreless frames in two turns. Sale owns a 6-3 record and 2.78 ERA in 15 career appearances (10 starts) against Oakland.

• Fiers struggled against Seattle in a loss on Opening Day in Japan but bounced back with a strong effort versus the Los Angeles Angels. The 33-year-old, who also hails from the Sunshine State, gave up just one hit with two strikeouts and three walks over six scoreless innings en route to victory. Fiers has had Boston’s number during his career, going 2-0 while yielding only five runs over 22 2/3 frames in three starts and one relief appearance.

• The Red Sox have surrendered 14 home runs in their first five games, with the starting pitchers serving up 11 of them.

• Oakland RHP Chris Bassitt (shin) is expected to begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Stockton on Thursday.
