• The visiting Boston Red Sox have moved a percentage point ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East and can gain a little more separation when they try to finish off a three-game road sweep Wednesday afternoon. Andrew Benintendi had a pair of RBIs and Christian Vazquez homered as the Red Sox picked up a 5-4 win Tuesday in Tampa Bay. The Rays left the bases loaded in the ninth while losing for the seventh time in their last eight games. Benintendi is 5-for-9 with a home run, a double and three RBIs in the series while Rafael Devers has 13 RBIs and nine runs scored over his last nine contests for the Red Sox, who have a share of second place for the first time since March 29.

• Travis d’Arnaud has been one of the few bright spots during Tampa Bay’s slide and he slugged his fifth home run in a seven-game span during Tuesday’s loss. Boston’s David Price and Tampa Bay’s Charlie Morton are a combined 18-6 but both will be looking to bounce back from ugly losses when they take the mound in the finale.

• Price tied his season highs by allowing six runs and eight hits over four innings at Baltimore on Friday. He allowed two home runs in the outing after serving up only two over his previous 10 appearances. The former Tampa Bay ace is 1-1 with a 2.65 ERA in three meetings with his former team this year and sports a 2.84 ERA in 94 career games at Tropicana Field.

• Morton was cruising at Yankee Stadium in his last start before New York got to him in the middle innings and chased him after 5 2/3. He was charged with a season high-tying five runs in his shortest start since he went four frames May 19 in another outing in the Bronx. The two-time All-Star blanked the Red Sox over six frames in their last encounter and is 4-1 lifetime versus Boston.

• The Rays placed 3B Yandy Diaz (foot) on the 10-day injured list and activated 3B Matt Duffy from the 60-day injured list.

• The Red Sox activated 1B Mitch Moreland from the 10-day injured list and optioned 3B Marco Hernandez to Triple-A Pawtucket.

• Boston DH/OF J.D. Martinez is 8-for-18 with six RBIs and four runs scored over his last four games.
