• The Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers were both among the early surprises of the season but each club has fallen off the map, tumbling into last place in their respective divisions. Owners of the worst record in the majors, Detroit will kick off a 10-game road trip with the first of four against the struggling Mariners on Thursday night. The Tigers have lost 10 of 12 since the All-Star break and are 33 games under .500 since winning eight of 12 to open the season.

• Conversely, Seattle bolted out of the gates with a 13-2 record but is 32 games below .500 since the blazing start. Daniel Vogelbach snapped out of a 2-for-22 funk by belting his 24th and 25th homers as the Mariners edged Texas 5-3 on Wednesday for their third win in 11 games since the All-Star break.  Detroit fell to a woeful 8-35 since June 1 following Wednesday’s 4-0 loss to Philadelphia and is expected to deal some key players by the trade deadline, including Nicholas Castellanos.

• Drew VerHagen will be summoned from Triple-A Toledo to make his first start of the season and first major league appearance since he was shelled for six runs on five hits and three walks in one inning versus Kansas City on May 4. The 28-year-old never worked more than one inning in 10 relief appearances prior to his demotion and walked 10 batters while striking out seven. VerHagen made 11 starts with Toledo, compiling a 4-2 record and 4.42 ERA.

• The rookie right-hander gets his second start as an opener — and seventh overall start — and then will be followed by veteran lefty Wade LeBlanc. Swanson gave up 2 hits and 2 runs in 2 innings at Oakland on July 17 in his first shot as an opener.
• Tigers 1B/DH Miguel Cabrera has two hits in his last 31 at-bats.
• The Mariners are awaiting results of an MRI exam on RF Domingo Santana (elbow), who had a team-high 65 RBIs.
• Tigers INF Niko Goodrum has hit safely in four straight games but also has struck out 11 times in that span.
