• The Minnesota Twins look to continue their offensive surge and create more cushion in the American League Central when they host the Chicago White Sox in the rubber match of the three-game set Wednesday afternoon. Nelson Cruz led the way with four extra-base hits, including a homer and three RBIs, as the Twins rolled to a 14-4 victory Tuesday to give them 53 runs combined in their past six contests with five wins. Cruz is 19-for-36 with eight homers and 20 RBIs in nine games against the White Sox this season while teammate Max Kepler also went deep Tuesday and is 15-for-39 with eight blasts, 20 runs knocked in and 15 runs scored during the season series which Minnesota leads 8-4. Jake Odorizzi gets the start for the Twins, who lead Cleveland by three games in the AL Central, in the series finale and Chicago counters with fellow right-hander Lucas Giolito in a battle of All-Star hurlers.
• The White Sox took the series opener 6-4 for their fourth win in seven contests, but gave up seven runs in the eighth inning to put Tuesday’s game out of reach after Jose Abreu had launched his 28th homer of the season early on to help give Chicago a 3-0 lead. White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson also went deep in the loss and is batting .407 this month while taking a seven-game hitting streak (15-for-30) into Wednesday’s matchup.
• Giolito has rebounded from allowing a season-high seven runs with four consecutive quality starts while giving up eight total tallies across 25 innings. The 25-year-old California native held the Los Angeles Angels to two runs over six innings with 11 strikeouts Friday after fanning 13 on Aug. 11, when he also yielded two runs over six frames against Oakland. Cruz is 3-for-5 with three homers versus Giolito, who is 1-1 with a 6.30 ERA in two starts against the Twins this year.
• Odorizzi is unbeaten in his last four trips to the mound after limiting Texas to three runs on five hits across 5 2/3 innings Friday in a no-decision. The 29-year-old Illinois native, who needs to complete 4 1/3 innings to reach 1,000 in his career, has surrendered a total of five runs during his unbeaten streak as he tries adding to his career-best win total. Odorizzi is 7-1 with a 3.29 ERA at home in 2019 and beat the White Sox on the road May 26 while permitting one hit over 5 1/3 scoreless innings.
• Minnesota OF Jake Cave has hit safely in eight straight games, going 14-for-28 in that stretch.
• Chicago 2B Yolmer Sanchez is 9-for-25 with three RBIs during his eight-game hitting streak.
• The Twins have recorded at least one extra-base hit in 80 straight games, fourth most in franchise history.
