Connecticut was poised to announce its return to the college basketball landscape but fell short against Arizona. The Huskies, who already have a win over Syracuse and have statement games against Florida State and Villanova awaiting before Christmas, look to remain focused when a young Lafayette team arrives Wednesday. Connecticut had a packed house of over 14,000 fans at the XL Center on Sunday and battled Arizona to the end before dropping a 76-72 decision. The Huskies shot 48.3 percent from the floor but 8-for-24 on 3-pointers and committed 19 turnovers.

Lafayette, winners of 25 games the past three seasons and a member of the Patriot League, dropped its fourth game in its last five tries, 64-62 at home against Sacred Heart on Sunday on a tip-in in the game’s final seconds.

• Isaac Suffren finished with a team- and career-high 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting against Sacred Heart, Paulius Zalys added 12 points and nine rebounds and Lukas Jarrett chipped in with a career-high 11 boards, as the Leopards shot 33.8 percent from the field. Sophomore guard Alex Petrie, the league rookie of the year last season, leads the team in scoring again this season at 14.3 points but is shooting just 36.8 percent, including 28.9 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Justin Jaworski averages 13.3 points and shoots it at 41.9 percent beyond the arc and 90.5 percent from the line, but two-thirds of his shots have been 3-pointers and he’s averaging less than two assists per game.

• Senior center Eric Cobb had 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting and 10 rebounds off the bench and has averaged 13.7 points and 10 rebounds in 25.3 minutes in three games against power conferences (Syracuse, Iowa) but hasn’t reached double figures in either category in any other game this season. Adams leads the team in scoring (18.8 points) and chips in 3.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists, while inconsistent guard Alterique Gilbert is next at 12.5 points and Christian Vital, who had 11 points but seven turnovers against Arizona, is next averaging 12.1 points. “There’s a lack of crispness with our passing,” coach Dan Hurley said. “Our habits aren’t where they need to be if you want to have a really good team across the board.”

• UConn has received a commitment from 6-9 Akok Akok, a shot-blocker and perimeter shooter who is a consensus top 40 prospect.

• Gilbert had made at least one 3-pointer in every game before going 0-of-3 from long range versus Arizona.

• The Leopards return eight of their top 10 players in scoring and minutes from last season.
