South Florida looks to continue its climb in the top half of the American Athletic Conference with a third straight victory when road-challenged Memphis pays a visit on Saturday afternoon. The Bulls, who have already won their most contests (14) since 2011-12, answered a three-game losing streak by beating Wichita State on Tuesday before rolling to a 77-57 win at East Carolina last Saturday. “I’m really proud of our guys,” USF coach Brian Gregory told reporters. “We said this was a response week. We win the game against Wichita State (54-41) and now you go on the road. Our guys wanted nothing to do with anything other than getting it done.” The Bulls, who split a pair of games with Memphis in 2017-18, have won 11 of their 13 contests in Tampa this season while the Tigers have struggled to a 2-7 record away from home after losing 95-79 at Tulsa on Wednesday.

Memphis turned the ball over 17 times and allowed 54.5 percent shooting from the field in the setback against the Golden Hurricane after winning four of its previous five games. “First half we were going through the motions,” Tigers coach Penny Hardaway told the Commercial Appeal. “Second half we were like, ‘We’re about to lose, let’s play hard.’ Which is weird, but that’s how it’s happened with us on the road all year.”

Senior guard Jeremiah Martin leads the team in scoring (15.1) and assists (4.3), but is just 2-of-20 from 3-point range over the last four contests. Senior forward Kyvon Davenport adds 14.5 points and a team-high 7.7 rebounds per game while senior guard Kareem Brewton Jr. is averaging 12 points in league contests, but made just 2-of-9 from the field the past two outings. Freshman guard Tyler Harris is the top 3-point threat (55 makes) and combined for 32 points, draining 8-of-18 from behind the arc, over the last two contests.

Junior transfer Laquincy Rideau continues to shine, averaging 13.9 points along with league highs of 5.8 assists and 3.3 steals per game after recording a double-double in the win at East Carolina. “He’s an intelligent kid, he’s got a good feel and he’s only gonna get better,” Gregory told the Tampa Bay Times. “I’m excited about coaching him every day because he brings it every single day.” Sophomore forward Alexis Yetna had 28 points and 13 boards at East Carolina for his 10th double-double of the season and the Frenchman leads the American in rebounds (10.1).

Memphis senior guard Raynere Thornton is averaging 12.4 points and 9.6 rebounds over the last five games.

USF sophomore G David Collins leads the team in scoring (14.3), but he shoots just 38.1 percent from field.

Tigers F Michael Parks Jr. has scored in double figures in two of the last four games and was blanked in the other two.
