What would life be like for Navy after the graduation of Cam Davis? The Midshipmen discovered on Tuesday night that they can still be dangerous without their do-everything guard as they stunned No. 25 Virginia 66-58. It was the first win for the Midshipmen over a ranked team since the David Robinson era in 1986. Friday night, when Navy (1-0) welcomes Virginia Tech (1-0) to Annapolis, Md., the Mids of the Patriot League will try for their second straight upset of an Atlantic Coast Conference foe from the Old Dominion.

Coming off a transformational 15-3 season, which included a shocking upset of eventual Big East champion Georgetown, Navy played brilliantly from the start in its opener as it hit eight of its first 10 shots from beyond the arc and never trailed after the opening minutes. John Carter (19 points) and Sean Yoder (15) led the barrage, sinking a combined 8 of 11 shots from long range.

The Mids also have returning starters in Greg Summers, Tyler Nelson and 6-7 Richard Njoku, an all-league defensive team choice.

Virginia Tech cruised in an 82-47 defeat of Maine on Tuesday night behind returning starters Justyn Mutts (15 points, seven rebounds, six assists) and Nahiem Alleyne (13 points, seven rebounds, four assists). Frontcourt reserve David N’Guessan (15 points) hit all seven of his shots from the floor.

Also back from last year’s 15-7 team is 6-9 Keve Aluma, who was a pleasant surprise after transferring from Wofford, leading the Hokies in scoring (15.2 points per game last season), rebounds (7.9) and blocks (1.3) after sitting out a year.
