Who will WIN this matchup?
Seattle Seahawks (2-1)
@ Arizona Cardinals (0-2)
Current odds:
Seattle Seahawks: (-240)
Arizona Cardinals: (+200)
• The line for this game is Seattle by 5.5 points.
• Russell Wilson and Kyler Murray square off for the first time when the Seattle Seahawks visit the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. Wilson is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and has won a Super Bowl ring with Seattle while Murray, the 2019 first overall draft pick, is trying to emulate his counterpart as he begins his NFL journey with the Cardinals. Wilson’s success while standing just 5-10 has helped fuel comparisons, and Seahawks coach Pete Carroll understands the rationale. “I think (Wilson) opened up the minds of other people because there weren’t a lot of people who thought he was going to be able to do very well,” Carroll told reporters. “So that opens up the door for Kyler to get a shot, and now they’re both playing. Kyler’s a really good ballplayer. There’s no doubt that he belongs, and he’s part of it and fits and all that.
• Murray, who also is 5-10, received advice from Wilson while trying to decide between football and baseball earlier this year, with Wilson once having had to make the same decision. “It was good to see a guy my size doing it,” Murray told reporters of Wilson’s NFL exploits. “I think that helps any kid. We kind of have the same stature, so being able to see him do it in the league, winning Super Bowls, that gives you a confidence boost.”
• Wilson is thriving with 901 yards and seven touchdowns without throwing an interception, but running back Chris Carson (158 yards) is struggling and has lost a fumble in each of the team’s first three games. “There’s been a lot of players over the years, through the ages, that have had issues at times,” Carroll said of Carson. “They put it to rest and it’s behind them and all that. That’s what’s going to happen here. You will not see me waver in my support for Chris and belief in the guy as a football player.” The defensive unit is allowing 26.3 points and middle linebacker Bobby Wagner was all over the field with a career-best 18 tackles in the Week 3 loss to New Orleans.
• Murray has thrown for 830 yards and four touchdowns while being intercepted three times, but he said the hardest thing to deal with is having zero victories. “You’ve just got to be optimistic,” Murray said. “You’ve got to be positive about it. You’re the quarterback. You’re the leader of the team. So I can’t be walking around with my head down.” The defense is being dinged for 443.3 yards per game, but defensive end Chandler Jones recorded two sacks and forced two fumbles in the Week 3 loss to Carolina, marking his 17th career multi-sack performance.
• The Seahawks won both of last season’s meetings, prevailing by three points on each occasion.
• Arizona WR Larry Fitzgerald (1,321 catches) is five receptions away from passing Tony Gonzalez for second place on the all-time list.
• Seattle LT Duane Brown (biceps) is being monitored closely and the club is hoping he will be available.
