The Carolina Hurricanes’ blueliners are seeing red – namely the goal light – as they visit the struggling Detroit Red Wings on Sunday. Carolina defensemen have produced an NHL-most 20 of the club’s 80 goals this season after Dougie Hamilton and Brett Pesce scored in Saturday’s 4-2 victory over Florida, giving them five wins in the last six games. Hamilton, who scored a career-high 18 goals last season, paces league defensemen with 10 and is second on the club with 25 points. The only Hurricanes with more goals are top-line forwards Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov, who have 11 apiece. Detroit has lost five straight after a 5-1 setback at New Jersey on Saturday and to make matters worse, leading scorer Anthony Mantha left the game in the first period with an undisclosed injury. Carolina prevailed 7-3 on Nov. 1 behind two goals and an assist from Aho in the first of three meetings this season.

• Svechnikov had a goal and an assist Saturday and leads the team with 26 points. Teuvo Teravainen recorded three assists versus Florida – his second three-point game of the season – and has 24 points. Petr Mrazek stopped 21 shots Saturday and will likely yield the net Sunday to James Reimer (3-4-0, 3.07 goals-against average, .903 save percentage), who is 4-4-2, 2.39, .920 in 12 games (10 starts) versus Detroit.

The top line consisting of Mantha (12 goals, 23 assists), Tyler Bertuzzi (10, 22) and Dylan Larkin (six, 16) was blanked by New Jersey. Defenseman Patrik Nemeth returned after missing five games with an illness and recorded two blocked shots and two hits in a game-high 23 minutes, 16 seconds of ice time. Jimmy Howard, who has lost five straight starts with a 5.30 goals-against average and .828 save percentage during that span, is expected in goal after Jonathan Bernier made 29 saves Saturday.

Hamilton owns a club-best plus-14 rating after finishing plus-3 on Saturday.

Red Wings D Mike Green (upper body) could miss his third straight game.

The Hurricanes have killed 20-of-21 penalties in the last seven contests while Detroit is 0-for-14 on the power play in its past five contests.
