Who will WIN this matchup?
Carolina Hurricanes (6-1-0)
@ San Jose Sharks (2-4-0)
Starting Goalies:
James Reimer (CAR): Likely
Martin Jones (SJ): Confirmed
Current odds:
Carolina Hurricanes: (+115)
San Jose Sharks: (-135)
• The Carolina Hurricanes bounced back from their first loss of the season with a strong defensive effort in the opener of their four-game road trip. They attempt to continue their impressive start to 2019-20 when they visit the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday. Petr Mrazek turned aside 31 shots in improving to 4-0-0 and Martin Necas scored to extend his point streak to four games as Carolina began its trek Tuesday with a 2-0 victory in Los Angeles. Teuvo Teravainen got back on the scoresheet with an assist as he was blanked in Saturday’s setback against Columbus after beginning the season with points in each of his first five games.
• San Jose continues a three-game homestand in search of its third straight overall victory after kicking off the campaign with a four-game losing streak during which it scored a total of five goals. The turnaround coincides with the return of Patrick Marleau, who rejoined to the team with which he played the first 19 seasons of his career last week after spending two campaigns in Toronto and is tied for third on club in scoring with three points in two contests.
• Sebastian Aho recorded his second goal – and point – of the campaign Tuesday as he scored into an empty net while short-handed late in the third period. The 22-year-old Finnish right wing, who has netted at least 24 tallies in each of his first three NHL seasons and led the team with personal highs of 30 goals and 83 points in 2018-19, is one point away from reaching 200 for his career. Erik Haula, who leads the team with five tallies, failed to score for only the second time in seven games this season Tuesday but registered his first assist.
• Logan Couture recorded a pair of assists in Sunday’s 3-1 triumph over Calgary in the opener of the homestand, giving him a team-leading six points and at least one in five of his six games this season. Tomas Hertl, who set career highs in goals (35), assists (39) and points last campaign, scored and set up another versus the Flames after being kept off the scoresheet in his first five contests of 2019-20. Brent Burns, who is the 23rd defenseman in NHL history to reach the 200-goal plateau, registered a tally and an assist in back-to-back games before being shut out Sunday.
• The Sharks are 3-for-22 on the power play and have allowed a league high-tying three short-handed goals.
• Carolina captain Jordan Staal appeared in his 900th NHL game Tuesday but was kept off the scoresheet for a second straight contest following a three-game point streak and remained four assists shy of 300 for his career.
• San Jose RW Timo Meier is expected to skate in his 200th NHL game Wednesday
