• Riccardo Saponara has only just returned from injury and may have to settle for a place on the bench against former club AC Milan.

• Andrea Conti has been included in AC Milan’s squad for the first time in 225 days but will lack match fitness. Hakan Calhanoglu and Franck Kessié have also made the squad, but Gennaro Gattuso says both are doubts. Mattia Caldara, meanwhile, has been ruled out with a calf injury. Suso and Mateo Musacchio are all expected back in the starting XI here after missing Thursday’s Europa League defeat to Real Betis.

• AC Milan looked on track but have now lost successive matches, following up their derby defeat with a home loss to Real Betis on Thursday.

• Sampdoria failed to score against Sassuolo last time out but are still unbeaten in four games. They will see Milan as a potential rival for Europa League qualification and will hope to get a positive result here.
