• Dominic Thiem resumed his season with lots of expectations and hopes but failed miserably at the first hurdle as he suffered an embarrassing defeat against the eventual quarterfinalist Filip Krajinovic in the second round of Cincinnati Masters, 2-6 1-6. Thiem has been getting close to winning his maiden slam for a few years now, and it wouldn’t be a big surprise if he finally manages to do it in New York this fortnight. After finishing as the runner-up to Rafael Nadal in the French Open 2018 and 2019, he reached the finals of the Australian Open earlier this year and was one set away from winning the title (five-set defeat against Novak Djokovic).

• Jaume Munar Clar also had a disappointing Cincinnati Masters campaign as he was taken down in three sets by the relatively inexperienced Jeffrey John Wolf in the final qualifying round,6-2 2-6 4-6. With eight wins from 20 outings (including exhibitions), this has been a difficult season for the Spaniard, and things are only going to get difficult for him against the #2 seed Dominic Thiem here.
