• Victoria Azarenka cruised into her first Western & Southern Open semifinal since she won the tournament seven years ago, defeating a crafty Ons Jabeur, 7-6, 6-2, in the last eight. The match was decided with the 70-minute opening set, during which the Belarusian trailed by a break three times and faced four set points.

• Johanna Konta has gone through her matches in even more clinical fashion than Azarenka, although the Brit did have the advantage of a first-round bye. She has dropped just 15 games across three rounds, beating a couple of qualifiers in Flipkens and 2006 champion Zvonareva, followed by deflating 13th seed Sakkari.

• Konta pales in comparison to Azarenka’s lifetime achievements on hard courts, particularly in the US, where she has won eight out of her 20 titles. But it is the Brit who leads the series by 2-1, winning at 2015 Wuhan (via ret.) and 2018 Montreal. Azarenka was just a year into her maternity comeback during their latest clash.
