The Phoenix Suns counted moral victories in losses to the Oklahoma City Thunder and Golden State Warriors but seemed to be moving further away from their first win in a loss at the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday. The Suns will try to take advantage of a team playing the second night of a back-to-back and find the win column for the first time when they host the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday.

Portland was outscored 23-20 by Curry alone in the third quarter on Tuesday and fell behind by as much as 35 before settling for a 127-104 loss. Garbage time during the last half of the fourth quarter may have revealed something the Trail Blazers can use going forward in rookie Jake Layman. The Maryland product did not get into any of the first three games but made his debut in the fourth quarter on Tuesday and went 6-of-8 from the field, including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, en route to 17 points in eight minutes.

Phoenix starting shooting guard Devin Booker turned 20 on Sunday and endured a miserable 3-of-12 shooting night before exiting with a toe injury that kept him out of Monday’s loss and leaves him questionable for Wednesday. Brandon Knight moved into the starting spot and delivered a team-high 18 points while hitting two of the team’s five 3-pointers (in 15 attempts). Small forward T.J. Warren is enjoying a breakout in his third season and leads the team in scoring at 21.3 points – more than 10 better than his career-high average of 11 last season.

Suns rookie PG Tyler Ulis got his longest look on Monday and handed out six assists in 18 minutes off the bench.

Portland SF Al-Farouq Aminu is 1-of-17 from 3-point range in the last three games.

Phoenix took two of three is the series last season, though the lone loss came at home 106-96 on Dec. 11.
