• Manager Marcus Gisdol stripped Johan Djourou of the captain’s armband and handed it to Gotoku Sakai, after the former failed to take responsibility in the club’s most difficult spell. Christian Mathenia could make his Hamburg debut in goal, if René Adler has to miss the game with an elbow injury. Gideon Jung or Cléber could get a chance from the start, with Emir Spahic a major doubt as well.

• Benjamin Hübner and Ermin Bicakcic both have a chance of starting in a back-three for Hoffenheim. Steven Zuber and the more defensive-minded Jeremy Toljan compete for a spot on the flanks. Mark Uth should return from injury, but will most likely start on the bench here.

• Hamburg only picked up two points in their first 10 matches in the worst start in club’s history. They desperately need results in the next few weeks, when their schedule becomes easier, but a solid performance here should help them to gain confidence ahead of next week’s derby against Bremen.
