After a much-hyped preseason that led to a No. 6 ranking, Florida crashed back down to earth with a thud Sunday, losing for the sixth straight time to archrival Florida State 63-51. The new-look Gators are still trying to find their way and they will look to regroup Thursday when they host a Towson team coming off a tough loss of its own, 84-80 against Kent State in overtime. “It can be a big wake-up call,” said Gators center/forward Kerry Blackshear Jr, a graduate transfer from Virginia Tech. “It can show how this team can come together rather than splinter.” The arrival of Blackshear is perhaps the biggest reason for Florida’s optimism, but it is taking time for a team relying on three heralded sophomores and six newcomers to develop chemistry and the result was an ineffective offense that hit just 28 percent of its shots from the floor and turned the ball over 16 times against Florida State. “As we struggled to score, it affected our defense,” Gators coach Mike White told reporters. “We weren’t very good. I wasn’t very good, period.”

Towson fell short against Kent State but it shot 46.2 percent in the second half and at least four Tigers have scored in double figures in every game this season.

Senior guard Brian Fobbs, who was named to the Colonial Athletic Association preseason first team, produced season-bests of 20 points and eight rebounds in the overtime loss to Kent State but he did miss all eight of his 3-point attempts. Freshman guard Jason Gibson came off the bench to add a season-best 18 points on 5-of-10 shooting and he joins Fobbs as the only two Tigers to hit double digits in all three games. Sophomore guard Jakigh Dottin leads the CAA in assist-to-turnover ratio as he has 11 assists to one turnover.

Blackshear recorded double-doubles in both games this season, producing 10 points and a game-best 13 rebounds against Florida State but all of his points against the Seminoles came on free throws as he was 0-for-5 from the floor. Sophomore Keyontae Johnson led the Gators with 19 points in the loss and his eight made field goals were more than the rest of the team combined (six). Fellow sophomore Noah Locke, who set a freshman team record with 81 3-pointers last year, was just 1-for-11 from the field and 0-for-7 from long distance versus Florida State.

These teams have only played each other once, with Florida winning 77-55 in 1988.

Gators G Scottie Lewis had three blocked shots against Florida State, the most in a game for a freshman since Kevarrius Hayes, who also totaled three versus the Seminoles in 2015.

The Gators have hit just 7-of-37 shots from 3-point range this season (18.9 percent).
