• The Chicago Sky look to start 3-0 for the first time in six years Thursday night when they face the Minnesota Lynx. A 3-0 start could be a harbinger of good things to come for the Sky considering they reached the WNBA Finals after winning their first four games of the 2014 season. Of course, they also had superstar Elena Delle Donne, but the current iteration of this team boasts plenty of star talent as well.
• But it has been one of Chicago’s lesser-heralded players – Kahleah Cooper – who has provided an early spark. Cooper, getting increased minutes as coach James Wade is letting Diamond DeShields play to her comfort level as she recovers from a knee injury, had 21 points Tuesday night as Chicago cruised past Los Angeles 96-78.
• Azura Stevens also had 21 points as five Sky players reached double figures, and point guard Courtney Vandersloot notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists. The Sky broke open a close game with a 15-2 burst to start the second half and finished 11 of 25 from 3-point range while shooting 54.4 percent overall.
• Minnesota was thwarted in its bid for a 2-0 start Tuesday, getting routed by Seattle 90-66. Sylvia Fowles became the WNBA’s all-time leading rebounder, passing Lynx assistant coach Rebekkah Brunson, but the Lynx were outscored 49-35 in the final two quarters. Damiris Dantas scored 18 points and Napheesa Collier was held scoreless in the second half after netting 11 in the first two quarters. Both players committed six turnovers as Minnesota had 19 for the game.
• Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve will also have to make do without forward Karima Christmas-Kelly, who suffered a torn Achilles in the defeat. It was the third straight year Christmas-Kelly had a season cut short due to injury and appeared in only six games in 2019.
