• Mike Trout had his first big game of the 2020 season Sunday in Oakland, but he didn’t get much help. The three-time MVP and his fellow Los Angeles Angels will try to gain a split of a season-opening four-game series at the Oakland Athletics on Monday. After opening the year 1-for-7 with two strikeouts, Trout launched a three-run homer and later added a sacrifice fly to provide all the offense for the Angels in Sunday’s 6-4 loss. David Fletcher went 4-for-4 and scored on Trout’s homer but their teammates combined to go 3-for-28 as six Oakland pitchers made an early 5-0 lead hold up.

• Catcher Sean Murphy slugged a 455-foot blast to cap the scoring for the Athletics, who have won 15 of 22 meetings with Los Angeles since the start of last season. Oakland aims for the series win behind Chris Bassitt, who opposes Griffin Canning for the visitors.

• Canning held opponents to a .235 average and posted 96 strikeouts in 90 1/3 innings as a rookie last year. He recorded an ERA of 5.30 on the road, despite a strong effort at Oakland on May 29, 2019, when he yielded a run and three hits in six frames. Ramon Laureano went 4-for-6 with two home runs and two doubles against the 24-year-old Canning last season.

• Bassitt was 4-14 through his first four seasons before his 10-5 campaign last year. He only faced the Angels twice in 2020 and gave up a combined seven runs in 10 2/3 innings to gain a pair of wins. The University of Akron product owns a 2.86 ERA in his career at Oakland Coliseum, spanning 29 games (23 starts).

• Laureano is 5-for-10 with two RBIs and four runs scored through the first three games.

• Fletcher is 6-for-11 with a walk on the season.

• Angels 1B/DH Albert Pujols sat Sunday and remains hitless in eight at-bats in 2020.
