@ San Diego Padres (2-1)

Current odds:
Arizona Diamondbacks: (+110)
San Diego Padres: (-120)
• The Arizona Diamondbacks have had limited success trying to figure out the starting pitching for the San Diego Padres through three games, but they were able to solve the bullpen just in time Sunday to avoid their first 0-3 start since 2014. The Diamondbacks hope to carry that late offensive surge in their first win of the season into the finale of their four-game set in San Diego when they try to earn a series split against the Padres. San Diego starters Chris Paddack, Dinelson Lamet and Garrett Richards have stymied Arizona’s offense in the season-opening series between the National League West rivals, allowing a total of one run on 10 hits across 16 innings. The Diamondbacks’ bats didn’t exactly come alive Sunday, but they were able to piece together two runs apiece in the eighth and ninth innings and score more runs over that span (four) than they did over the first 25 innings of the series (three).
• Eric Hosmer opened the scoring in Sunday’s 4-3 defeat with a solo shot and reached base three times overall for the second time in as many games. The former All-Star has tormented Arizona in this series despite sitting out Saturday with a stomach issue, going 4-for-6 with two doubles, a home run, two walks and seven RBIs.
• After spending the first two-plus years of his big-league career in St. Louis, Weaver held the opposition to three runs or fewer in 10 straight starts after a rough debut with Arizona before an elbow injury sidelined him for nearly four months. The former first-round pick of the Cardinals was able to return right before the end of 2019 and worked two scoreless frames against the Padres. Weaver took a hard-luck loss in his only other start in San Diego last season, yielding two runs and striking out seven across six innings.
• The Padres did not announce a probable starter following Sunday’s loss, but left-hander Joey Lucchesi and former Milwaukee Brewer right-hander Zach Davies are the most likely candidates to get the nod. Lucchesi led San Diego in quality starts (11), innings pitched (163 2/3) and strikeouts (158) last season en route to going 10-10 with a 4.18 ERA in 30 turns. Davies finished 2019 by going 2-0 with a 2.31 ERA in September and posted a 10-7 mark with a 3.55 ERA in 31 starts with Milwaukee last year.
• Padres SS Jake Cronenworth made his major-league debut as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning and delivered an RBI double.
• Arizona OF Starling Marte has collected a hit in each contest and five for the series. His .338 batting average since July 20, 2019, is the third-best mark among NL hitters in that span.
• San Diego OF Tommy Pham didn’t steal a base after swiping two in each of the first two games, but the Padres still recorded three Sunday to increase their major-league leading total to seven.
