• Khris Davis led the majors with 48 homers in 2018 and holds the early advantage out of the gate this season with 10 to go along with 20 RBIs. The 31-year-old slugger hit another homer by striking a two-year contract for a reported $33.5 million heading into the Oakland Athletics’ opener of a three-game series versus the visiting Toronto Blue Jays on Friday. Davis has belted 143 homers since being acquired in a trade with Milwaukee in 2016, with his three seasons of at least 40 blasts tying him with Mark McGwire and Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx for the most in Athletics’ history. On a significantly smaller scale, Mark Chapman launched his third homer in six games as Oakland posted its fifth win in seven outings with 2-1 triumph over Houston on Wednesday.

• Former Athletic Eric Sogard has made an immediate impact with Toronto since being promoted from Triple-A Buffalo this week, collecting two doubles among his six hits to go along with three RBIs and two runs scored. Sogard ripped a three-run double and Randal Grichuk, Justin Smoak and Teoscar Hernandez each had a home run as the Blue Jays recorded their third win in four contests with a 7-4 victory over Minnesota on Thursday.

• Stroman sustained his third straight loss on Sunday after allowing three unearned runs on as many hits in four innings in an 8-4 setback versus Tampa Bay. The 27-year-old was done in by an error from second baseman Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in the third inning as well as his own throwing error in the fourth to go along with four free passes. Stroman, who has struggled against Marcus Semien (4-for-7) and Davis (3-for-6, one homer), owns an 0-1 mark with a 6.75 ERA and 1.88 WHIP in four career encounters against Oakland.

• Brooks rebounded from a demoralizing outing at Houston on April 6 with a strong one in Baltimore five days later, allowing three runs on as many hits in six innings of an 8-5 win. The 28-year-old benefited from a pair of homers by Davis in that contest against the Orioles to help him overcome one from Dwight Smith Jr. in the first inning. Brooks, who has worked himself back to the majors after a 3 1/2-year absence due to injuries and poor performance, is winless in his previous two encounters with the Blue Jays.

• Hernandez has reached base in 19 of his last 35 at-bats.

• Oakland SS Jurickson Profar, who has a club-high five errors, has 10 RBIs over his last eight games.

• Grichuk has 11 hits and nine runs scored in his last nine contests.
