• The road had not been kind to the Cincinnati Reds prior to their series opener against the Padres in San Diego. Cincinnati looks to make it two road wins in a row after dropping its first seven away from home when it visits San Diego on Friday. The Reds, who began their seven-game road trip by losing three straight against the Los Angeles Dodgers, managed only five hits in Thursday’s 4-1 triumph over the Padres. But three were home runs, including a shot by Joey Votto on San Diego starter Chris Paddack’s third pitch of the game.

• San Diego recorded six hits as it suffered its fourth consecutive loss following a four-game winning streak. Manny Machado plated the Padres’ lone run with a double, giving him a hit in six of his last seven contests.

• DeSclafani remains in search of his first win of the season after escaping with a no-decision against St. Louis in Mexico on Sunday. The 28-year-old native of New Jersey surrendered four runs – all in the first inning – on five hits (two homers) and three walks over four frames. DeSclafani has made three career starts versus San Diego, going 1-0 while allowing five runs and 17 hits with 14 strikeouts and two walks in 18 innings.

• Strahm has bounced back from a disastrous season debut in the rotation, allowing a total of two runs – one earned – and nine hits over 10 innings in his last two starts. The 27-year-old native from North Dakota settled for a no-decision in Arizona on Saturday after giving up five hits over five scoreless frames. Strahm made his only career appearance against the Reds last season, when he registered five strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings of relief but suffered the loss after yielding one run and two hits in Cincinnati on Sept. 7.

• Padres SS Fernando Tatis Jr. is riding a seven-game hitting streak during which he has gone 11-for-26 with two homers and six RBIs.

• Votto’s blast in the series opener was the 271st of his career, moving him past Adam Dunn for fourth place on the franchise list.

• San Diego LF Wil Myers was kept out of the starting lineup on Thursday due to a stomach illness after homering in each of the previous two games.
