• The Milwaukee Brewers stumbled into the All-Star break and opened the second half of the season with a difficult loss. They’ll try to snap out of their funk when they play the middle contest of their three-game series against the visiting San Francisco Giants on Saturday. The Brewers suffered through an 8-15 slide going into the break and lost the series opener 10-7 after Buster Posey delivered a tiebreaking grand slam in the top of the 10th inning as they fell 1 1/2 games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs in the National League Central. Milwaukee outhit San Francisco 13-10 on Friday, but the Giants belted a season-high five home runs – including the sixth in a seven-game span by Evan Longoria.

• San Francisco figured to be in sell mode at the trade deadline but has won seven of its last eight to get within 4 1/2 games of a wild-card spot in the NL. Madison Bumgarner, one of the bigger names expected to be dealt before the deadline, will start Saturday for the Giants despite being hit in the left elbow by a line drive in his final start before the break.

• Bumgarner lasted just two innings before taking the liner off his arm against St. Louis last Saturday. He yielded three runs and seven hits while registering 20 strikeouts over 13 innings in his previous two starts, winning both of them. The four-time All-Star is 7-4 with a stellar 2.76 ERA against Milwaukee during his career.

• Davies hit a rough patch in the middle of June but has bounced back with two straight solid outings, giving up a total of one run in 10 1/3 innings. He is winless over his last five starts, a drought that began with a loss at San Francisco on June 14 in which he gave up three runs in five frames. Pablo Sandoval is 4-for-6 with a home run and two doubles against Davies, who is 0-2 despite posting a 2.81 ERA in three career matchups with the Giants.

• Brewers RF Christian Yelich is batting .374 in 39 home games.

• Giants All-Star LHP Will Smith blew a save on Friday, marking the first time in 24 opportunities this season he has done so, but picked up the win to improve to 2-0.

• San Francisco can clinch a season series victory for the fifth time in the last six years with a win either Saturday or Sunday.
