• The Miami Marlins and San Francisco Giants each occupy last place in their respective divisions, although only one team is playing like it appears comfortable at that location. Winners of nine of their last 12, the Marlins look to complete their third sweep of their past four series on Thursday afternoon when they face the reeling San Francisco Giants. Jorge Alfaro collected a career-high four hits and Neil Walker had the go-ahead double in the seventh inning of Wednesday’s 4-2 win for Miami. Alfaro, who was traded for fellow catcher J.T. Realmuto in the offseason, has six hits and two runs scored in the series and is 14-for-37 with three homers over the last 12 games.

• While the Marlins are heating up, the Giants are feeling small as they have permitted 63 runs en route to losing a season-high seven in a row. Brandon Belt drove in both of his team’s runs on Wednesday, highlighted by a home run that extended his hitting streak to five games.

• Beede is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to receive the spot start in the series finale. The 26-year-old has posted a 2.34 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in seven starts in the Pacific Coast League, but was shelled in three appearances with the big-league club earlier this month (12.60 ERA and 2.60 WHIP). “I don’t need to be bigger than the moment I’m pitching in,” Beede said, per the San Francisco Chronicle. “I need to just stay calm, execute pitches and not give the hitters too much credit.”

• Alcantana answered his best start of his young career with another difficult one on Saturday, as he countered a two-hit shutout with a five-run, six-hit effort over five innings in a 5-0 setback at Washington. The 23-year-old Dominican has fared better in Miami, posting a 2-3 mark with an ERA just above four while limiting the opposition to a .250 batting average. Alcantara has kept the ball in the park in each of the last two outings after being taken deep six times in his previous four.

• San Francisco 2B Joe Panik has nine hits and five runs scored in his last seven games.

• Miami rookie OF Harold Ramirez has hit safely in nine straight games and reached base in 13 of his first 14 major league contests.

• Giants LF Mike Yastrzemski, the 28-year-old grandson of Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, is 0-for-8 in the series and 3-for-15 since being called up from Sacramento on Saturday.
