Washington has had trouble breaking through in the process, but they have moved forward in the last couple of weeks having won seven of their last 10 games played. This has seen their bats pick it up a bit in the last week such as second baseman Brian Dozier batting .548 with two home runs, five RBI, and four runs scored in the past five games played. Dozier’s production hasn’t been at the level that has come to be expected from him, but his recent uptick in play could be a sign of things to come in his first campaign with the Nationals. Meanwhile, third baseman Anthony Rendon‘s production has been the key fixture in their batting order as he’s batting .324 with 11 home runs, and 40 RBI. In the last six games, he is batting .350 with a home run and six RBI.

San Diego has dropped six out of their last 10 games played that have kept them at arm’s length in their push to secure a wildcard. This has seen them have their fair share of struggles offensively being in the bottom half of the league in that regard currently ranking 24th in runs scored, 25th in hits, 29th in double, 26th in batting average, and 19th in slugging percentage. Their lack of consistent production from their bats has put them in a spot of having to depend more greatly on their pitching staff to push them forward. The Padres have been able to get dependable production from veteran first baseman Eric Hosmer, who is batting .283 with 10 home runs and 36 RBI.

Behind the presence of Scherzer on the mound should give the Nationals an advantage over the Padres. It also helps that San Diego’s best bats in Machado and Hosmer have struggled a bit over the last few weeks. All this appears to trend things in Washington’s direction.
