• The San Francisco Giants have opened the season with three straight series losses, including a four-game set at San Diego to begin the year. They will try to get a measure of revenge this week when they host the Padres for three games beginning Monday night. After losing three of four at San Diego and then two of three at the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Giants began their home schedule losing two of three to the Tampa Bay Rays, capped by Sunday’s 3-0 defeat. San Francisco was held to five hits – all singles – while scoring one run or fewer for the fourth time in its first 10 contests.

• The Padres also struggled to get the bats going in a 4-1 setback at St. Louis on Sunday after taking the first two games of that series. San Diego left-hander Eric Lauer won a pitchers’ duel with Giants southpaw Madison Bumgarner in a 2-0 victory for the Padres on Opening Day and those two are matched up again in Monday’s series opener.

• Lauer tossed six scoreless innings in the previous matchup with the Giants but struggled five days later against the Arizona Diamondbacks, giving up four runs and nine hits in five innings. The former first-round selection has a 2.86 ERA in four career starts against San Francisco. Catcher Buster Posey is 4-for-10 with two doubles against Lauer.

• Bumgarner allowed two runs in seven frames while striking out nine opposite Lauer on Opening Day. He gave up five unearned runs in six innings against the Dodgers on Tuesday to sustain another hard-luck loss. The North Carolina native, who is 11-10 in his career against the Padres, is 54-38 with a stellar 2.69 ERA in 121 career starts at home.

• Padres RF Hunter Renfroe is 7-for-15 with three homers, three doubles and three walks during a five-game hitting streak.

• Giants CF Kevin Pillar went 0-for-3 on Sunday to fall to 3-for-32 on the season between Toronto and San Francisco.

• San Diego CF Franmil Reyes is 2-for-22 on the year.
