• The status of Colorado star Nolan Arenado will be determined Thursday, sometime before the Rockies open a four-game home series against the San Diego Padres. Arenado was plunked on his left foreman by Cole Hamels of the Chicago Cubs during Wednesday’s 10-1 loss and later departed with a painful bruise. X-rays were negative from a pitch Arenado felt was intentional during a contest that saw the Rockies’ 10-game home winning streak reach an end. “When I first got hit, I knew it was on the meat, where the muscle is, so I was feeling OK,” Arenado told reporters afterward. “But it was throbbing and it got super tight, and sometimes when it gets super tight quick it can be a break. It was just getting tight and the game was getting ugly so they thought just get me out of there and get me rested and hopefully feel better (Thursday).” Arenado is in the starting line-up Thursday night.
• San Diego has dropped four straight games and eight of its last 11 after dropping a 4-2 road decision to the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday. Slumping Padres third baseman Manny Machado is mired in a 5-for-43 funk over his last 12 appearances and is batting .240, 40 points below his career mark.
• Strahm returns from a short stay on the injured list with a rib injury as he looks to bounce back from consecutive losing starts. The 27-year-old was torched for a season-worst seven runs as well as seven hits (two homers) in a loss to the Miami Marlins on June 2. Strahm has pitched four shutout innings in three career relief appearances against the Rockies and will be making his first start at Coors Field.
• Gray lost to the New York Mets in his last outing when he gave up four runs and eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. The 27-year-old has fared well at Coors Field this season by going 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in 30 innings over five starts. Gray is 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA in two outings against the Padres this season and a solid 9-3 with a 2.70 ERA in 17 career starts against San Diego.
• Padres LF Wil Myers, who is 12-for-31 with three homers against Gray, is just 4-for-28 with a solo homer in June.
• Colorado OF David Dahl was 3-for-4 on Wednesday for his seventh multi-hit outing in the past 14 games.
• San Diego optioned standout rookie Chris Paddack to Class A Lake Elsinore to help limit his innings with a stretch of three off-days in an eight-day stretch on the horizon and recalled fellow RHP Robert Stack from Triple-A El Paso.
